My first steps behind a microphone were in independent radio: improvised studios, enthusiasm and a few technical miracles. At Radio 6 Vallées, the studio was assembled and taken apart every weekend. Making the equipment work was part of learning radio.
Radio Margot, Radio Air Libre, Sud Inter, Kiss and Fréquence 1 came before FM Le Soir, with evening music programmes and the 6–9 a.m. breakfast show. At SIS, mornings combined news, games, traffic and commercial production.
Two lessons stayed with me: talk to people and stay calm when everything stops working. Technology was never far from the microphone.
